BENGALURU: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala in his Republic Day address on Sunday said that men and boys should be educated so that they learnt to treat women with respect and a safe climate is created for women.

“Karnataka has been implementing effective measures to maintain law and order in the State. Police are being equipped with the latest technologies and practises for prevention as well as expeditious investigation of crimes. Mahatma Gandhiji believed that the day a woman can walk freely at midnight on the roads, that day we can say that India achieved Independence,” the Governor said in Bengaluru.

He also spoke about the disastrous flood that hit the set last monsoon and lauded the State government’s efforts to mitigate the situation. “The State government’s response has been swift and well-coordinated with around seven lakh people evacuated to safe places by the joint rescue teams comprising of central and state agencies.” He said the timely relief of Rs 10,000 each has been paid to the Rs 2.07 lakh affected families directly into their bank accounts.

His appreciation comes even as the fund-starved state government is looking for additional flood-damage funds from the Centre. Although the state has pegged the loss at Rs 30,000 crore, the Centre has so far announced Rs 1,860 crore in two instalments for the flood damage.
