Kanhaiya Kumar, others may face strict action: JNU
NEW DELHI: The JNU administration is unlikely to show any leniency towards those found “guilty of misconduct” during the February 9 incident that had led to the arrests of Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya on sedition charges. According to sources, Kumar, the student union president who is out on conditional bail, Khalid and Bhattacharya—two of the organisers also out on bail—and two others are likely to face rustication for two semesters under Statute 32(5) of the university while the others will be let off with “comparatively lighter punishment”. Each student will be informed about the punishment this week before the exams begin.

“Kumar and four others are likely to face the strictest punishment. But the vice-chancellor has the discretion of changing the punishment. Some will be let off with fines and a few others who were earlier part of JNUSU will get ‘academic suspension’. They will not be allowed hostel facilities during this period,” said a senior official. Eight students underwent academic suspension from February 11 to March 11.

A high-level inquiry committee of JNU submitted its report on March 11. Its content was not made public, but the 21 show-caused students were handed a part of it. The other students likely to face action include former JNUSU president Ashutosh, general secretary Rama Naga, joint secretary Saurabh Sharma, councillor Mohd Qadeer, Mujeeb Gattoo of School of Social Sciences and Sweta Raj of School of Languages.
