GUWAHATI: Kanhaiya Kumar, the leader of All India Student Federation, is the poster boy of Congress party’s outdoor campaign in poll bound Assam.

In Guwahati, Congress party has put up huge hoardings depicting president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union in jail.

Left parties, which are contesting around 59 seats in Assam, are in touch with Kumar to campaign for them in the state.

Suprakash Talukdar, state secretariat member of CPI (M) told ET, "We have got in touch with Kanahiya, he is likely to campaign for Left parties in Assam. It is good that Congress stood by Kanahiya and is using his picture to depict the NDA government’s high handedness but Congress must not forget that it had imposed emergency which gagged free speech."

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi kick started the debate about Kanhaiya in Assam, which is going to polls in two phases on April 4 and 11, when he said that he supports Kanahiya and dared government of India to slap sedition charge against him for supporting the JNU president.

Assam Pradesh Congress committee spokesperson, Abdul Khaleque said, "Kanahiya today epitomizes secularism, he is the symbol of nationalism. Kanahiya is symbol of free speech and we want to depict how under the present NDA government free speech is being attacked."
