Kalam to continue development efforts

Kalam says he would be with people to help push India to become an economically developed nation.

CHENNAI: Former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam on Thursday said his interaction with the people of India was not over after demitting office and that he would be with them to help push India to become an economically developed nation.

"I am going to be with the people to push India to become an economically developed nation in the National Prosperity Index," he told reporters after addressing Professors of Anna University.

"My aim is if I see smiles of one billion people in the country, I will be happy," he said.

"I want to see self confidence in every person....how we can inject it into everyone," the former President said.

To a query, the 'missile scientist' said a democratic nation of one billion people from different cultures and religions "needs core competence to give leadership to them, which is a unique thing."

Asked if he had achieved all that he had planned when he was President, he said "I had a plan....I went through that. One of the things was I went to all the states and Union Territories, saw tears-both happy and sad."

Kalam said linking of rivers would solve the water problem in the country. He said each state should link rivers within their state first and then all the rivers in the country.

"My message for the youth below 25 years of age is be self confident that India can be a nation with progress."
