Kalam moots separate Science Cadre for research
Favouring the creation of a separate "Science Cadre" for research after post-graduation, former President A P J Abdul Kalam today said there was a need to attract brilliant students to the pure sciences.

MADURAI: Favouring the creation of a separate "Science Cadre" for research after post-graduation, former President A P J Abdul Kalam today said there was a need to attract brilliant students to the pure sciences.
"There should be an assurance that at least 400 to 500 PGs are involved in pure science research in various fields. I am working in that direction," he said participating in the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the Thiagarajar College of Engineering and declaring open the Centre for Advanced Research in Evolutionary Computing.
As high as 90 per cent of students were seeking professional courses and there was need to create avenues of research for the rest 10 per cent, he said.
Kalam said engineering colleges should identify brilliant students and provide them right environment for research.
Innovation and creativity helped the growth of knowledge and economy, he said and added India stood eighth in the global innovative index.
However, in the global competitive index, India is in the 23rd position. It has to improve and bridge the gap between innovation and facing the global competition, he said.
"That is necessary for the country to become economically developed. We should be in the first five ranks and for this also research in basic science is necessary," the former President said.
Kalam stressed the need for focusing on research in seven fields which were drawing the attention of the entire world.
There was need to tap solar energy in a big way for which the efficiency of the Photo voltaic cells which ranged 15 to 20 per cent should be increased to 40 to 45 per cent.
