KHARAGPUR: President A P J Abdul Kalam on Thursday called for speedy commercialisation of nano-technology to allow India to play a lerger role in the global market.
While concentrating on basic research, industrial groups of all sizes should simultaneoulsy work on commercialisation of nano-technology, he said.
"The main focus should be on speedy commercialisation to fit into the global market. The time is now ripe since our economy is in the ascending phase and the manufacturing sector has established adequate capacity to promote rapid commercialisation of products," Kalam said at a function at the Indian Institute of Technology here.
"We never produced an indigenous aircraft until very recently. Also we missed the micro-electronic revolution in the 1970s. Similarly in LCD, we never even started good commercial production while countries like Taiwan and South Korea have become world leaders in commercial production of these products," Kalam said.
"We should not repeat this in areas like nano-technology. I would suggest to the government to set apart sufficient funds on a non-lapsable basis for nano-technology commercialisation and I would like industries to take a lead in this matter," he said.
"We should mount a mission mode operation to deliver tangible products to meet our national demand as well as to be beneficial to other countries."
Kalam pointed to possible areas for cooperative missions that could be developed using nano-technology. These included the fields of agriculture, infrastructure, energy, safe drinking water, healthcare, aerospace and ICT.
