KABUL: The Indian embassy in the Afghan capital today resumed issuing visas, nearly a week after a powerful suicide attack on the mission left at least 58 people dead.

The embassy's consular section, which was also destroyed in the last Monday's blast, resumed functioning today, officials at the mission said.

Ambassador Jayant Prasad said the embassy was trying its best to restore its normal functioning and resumption of visa services was an "an important element".

The reopening of the Indian embassy consular section to the public coincided with a high-level visit by Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon here to discuss ways to revamp security at the Indian assets in the war-torn country.

Among the dead in the blast were four Indians, including Brigadier-level Defence Attache R D Mehta and senior IFS officer V V Rao.
