Justice Ranjan Gogoi takes over as the 46th Chief Justice of India

Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who was born on 18 November, 1954 in Assam's Dibrugarh district, is the first person from the North-Eastern states to hold the post of Chief Justice of India.

Ranjan Gogoi has been sworn-in as the 46th Chief Justice of India by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cabinet ministers and former PM Manmohan Singh were present for the oath-taking ceremony.

Justice Gogoi was born on 18 November, 1954, in Assam's Dibrugarh district. He is the first person from the North-Eastern states to hold the post of Chief Justice of India.

His father Keshab Chandra Gogoi served as the 9th chief minister of Assam in 1982 and was a Congress politician. Keshab Gogoi was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the state's Dibrugarh constituency.


Ranjan Gogoi's tenure as the CJI will continue till November 17, 2019, a day before he turns 65 years old. He will be presiding over key cases including the Ayodhya title suit and the NRC in Assam.

Speaking at a session on Monday, Ranjan Gogoi said that pendency of cases is bringing a disrepute to the entire judicial system. However, he also said that he has a plan to combat this problem.

He was also one of the four judges who held the unprecedented press meet raising apprehensions about the functioning of then CJI, Dipak Misra on the administrative side.
