Jungle Raj thing of the past: UP Police tells Mayawati

LUCKNOW: When Bahujan Samaj Party ( chief and a former CM of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati applauded the Hyderabad Police for its encounter killings on Friday and asked the UP Police to "learn" from them, the police department of the country's most populated as well as the most dangerous state UP was not one to take things lying down.

The police was quick to retort to Mayawati's remark that UP treats its criminals as "state guests" and that there was "jungle raj" in the state, with piercing data and some chest thumping.

"The figures speak for themselves. Jungle Raj is a thing of the past. No longer now. 103 criminals killed and 1859 injured in 5178 police engagements in the last more than 2 years. 7745 criminals surrendered or cancelled their own bails to go to jail.

Hardly state guests," the UP Police's official Twitter handle carried in response to Mayawati's statement.

UP Police's post comes in the middle of national furore over the burning of a 23-year old rape victim survivor in Unnao on Thursday as well another act of brutal relentlessness coming to light from Chitrakoot where a dancer was shot at in a wedding after she stopped dancing for the guests. She has been admitted in Kanpur and is in a critical condition, as reported by IANS.

The four key accused in the gruesome rape and murder of a 26-year old veterinarian in Hyderabad were killed by the police in an encounter when two of the accused snatched the police's arms and opened fire at them at the spot of crime where they had been taken to recreate the crime scene.

Since morning this act of extra judicial execution by the Hyderabad police has created a veritable stir in the nation. While some impassioned citizens, including some parliamentarians like Jaya Bachchan have lauded the police's act, others including human rights activists, journalists and political commentators have condemned the act as barbaric.
