Judges should act against probe agencies too: Congress

Congress on Saturday urged Chief Justice of India N V Ramana to evoke Constitutional provisions to stop central investigative agencies from acting as "stooges" of the ruling establishment, a day after the CJI said "actions and inactions" of the CBI had raised questions on its credibility.

Ramana had on Friday also called for bringing central investigating agencies under an independent umbrella body while delivering a lecture on 'Democracy: Role and responsibilities of investigative agencies' on CBI foundation day.

The Congress leadership said the CJI and other Supreme Court judges must go beyond strong words to take action.


"The truth that the CJI must understand, and it is there for every citizen to see, is that the CBI, ED (Enforcement Directorate) and the income-tax (department) are stooges of BJP and the (Narendra) Modi government, to be unleashed against their electoral opponents," AICC spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged. Accusing central agencies of acting at the behest of the ruling establishment, Surjewala alleged, Now when Modi ji and BJP go to fight an election, the first people to arrive are CBI, ED and I-T."
