Joti Basu supports CRPF deployment in Nandigram

CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu said the central forces' presence there would be good as the opposition parties were clamouring for Central intervention to restore peace in the area.

KOLKATA: Notwithstanding opposition by some Left Front partners to the West Bengal government's decision to deploy CRPF at Nandigram, CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu on Thursday said the central forces' presence there would be good as the opposition parties were clamouring for Central intervention to restore peace in the area.

"It will be good if the CRPF comes. The opposition (parties) are demanding central intervention," Basu told media persons when asked about the state government moving the Centre for CRPF deployment in Nandigram.

While declining to comment on the opposition by Front partners CPI, Forward Bloc and RSP to the state government's move in having the CRPF deployed in Nandigram, the veteran Marxist leader said the issue of the deployment of the central forces should be discussed within the Left Front.

CPM Politburo member Brinda Karat, later said the matter would be discussed at the party state committee.
