BJP said that Mahanta is trying to create confusion. Despite AGP being partner of the BJP led coalition ruling Assam, Mahanta has stoutly resisted the amendment.

GUWAHATI: With bitter opposition to citizenship (amendment) bill 2016 in Assam, Joint parliamentary Committee will be in Assam on a two day visit on November 2 and 3.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal requested Chairman of the Committee Satyapal Singh to visit Assam.

The Joint Committee will hear from organisations and stakeholders regarding the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016.

BJP has trained gun on former Chief minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta following his remark that religious persecution is no longer a problem in Bangladesh.

BJP said that Mahanta is trying to create confusion.Despite AGP being partner of the BJP led coalition ruling Assam, Mahanta has stoutly resisted the amendment.

Mahanta said the Indian government has not formally informed the Bangladesh government about the infiltration problem. Mahanta, who was AGP’s founder-president, was in Dhaka to attend the 20th triennial conference of the Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League.

The bill for making minority communities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for applying for Indian citizenship is referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee of both the Houses.
