JNU row: Cops, Registrar General differ from Supreme Court-appointed panel on violence

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police and the Registrar General of Delhi High Court seem to have differed with the apex court-appointed Committee on the violence in Patiala House Court complex on February 15 and 17 in their reports submitted to the Supreme Court.

Sources said the six-member committee of senior lawyers, whose report was not signed by one member who represents the Delhi Police in the matter, said the accused, JNUSU President Kanhaiya Kumar who was arrested on sedition charge, was assaulted both outside and inside the court room.

However, the police and the Registrar's reports have suggested that Kumar was not assaulted inside the courtroom as mentioned by the apex-court appointed panel.

The report of the this panel has been signed by senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Rajeev Dhawan, Dushyant Dave, Haren Raval and advocate A D N Rao.

Senior advocate Ajit K Sinha, who is representing the police and was included in the panel, has given a separate report in which he said the student leader was not assaulted inside the court room and his finding is identical to that of the Registrar's.

On perusing all the reports, a bench comprising Justices J Chelameswar and A M Sapre, said "there are allegations and counter-allegations".

All the reports were filed in the sealed covers and the bench today said the concerned parties could get them from the apex court registry for filing their objections, before the matter is taken for hearing against on March 10.
