J&K violence: Mehbooba Mufti urges national leaders to show statesmanship

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti urged the national leadership to get Jammu and Kashmir out of the “vicious cycle of killings” and said civil society across the country has a major role to play in finding a solution to the difficulties people in the state are facing.

“Civil society in the state and the country has a major role in finding a solution to the present difficulties of the people of the state. National leadership of the country should show the element of compassion and display the statesmanship to get J&K out of this vicious cycle of killings,” Mufti said on Monday, the first day of opening of secretariat in summer capital Srinagar.

The comments came at a time when Kashmir Valley observed a shutdown against continued killings in the state amid a crackdown on terrorists and growing civilian casualties that have sparked protests against the government.


In the first week of May, the count was 24, including 14 civilians, while scores of people were injured in anti-government protests.

The CM, whose PDP is running the government in alliance with the BJP, said the ultimate victims of the violence have been people belonging to the lowest strata of society, poor and underprivileged who bear the brunt of situational uncertainties.
