Srinagar: Senior Congress leader Karan Singh on Monday said that the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir should be held immediately as a democracy cannot function without elections.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the AICC presidential voting at the party's Srinagar headquarters, Singh said all parties in the region have been demanding the immediate conduct of elections here.

"We have been hearing that the elections will be conducted in March next year. But there is no official confirmation yet. Congress and other parties have been demanding early elections and they should be held at the earliest," said Singh.

On the recent controversy of the inclusion of non-locals into the voters' list here, Singh said there is a lot of confusion over the issue and he would not be able to comment on this.
