J&K Assembly session: Opposition to target Omar Abdullah govt over governance, reservation and statehood

Srinagar: The autumn session of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly is starting from Monday, with Opposition parties geared up to corner the government over the issues of governance failures, reservation policy and statehood.

The opposition BJP, People's Democratic Party, Awami Ittehad Party and the ruling National Conference's alliance partner Congress have stated that they would raise people's issues as the Omar Abdullah-led government has failed to deliver on the promises made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

BJP, the principal Opposition party in the 90-member assembly with 29 MLAs, plans to raise the outsourcing of government jobs, corruption in public offices and the delay in holding panchayat and urban local bodies' polls.


"This government cannot hide behind the excuse that statehood is the solution to all problems. Let them resign if they cannot deliver in this set up... This government has amplified corruption and gives jobs to people recommended by party workers," said BJP's Sunil Sharma, who is the leader of the Opposition in the assembly.

PDP has said that it will focus on unemployment, outsourcing of jobs, the reservation policy and the regularisation of daily wagers in government service.

J&K Pradesh Congress Committee president and MLA from Srinagar, Tariq Hameed Karra, said Congress would continue to raise people's genuine concerns in the assembly despite being in an alliance with NC.

"We are in alliance with the National Conference, but that does not mean we will not raise public issues. We will take up genuine concerns and ensure they are expedited," said Karra after meeting Congress MLAs.

Meanwhile, the ruling NC held a special meeting of its legislators in Srinagar, chaired by party president Farooq Abdullah. The meeting, attended by Omar Abdullah and others, chalked out a strategy for raising public issues, demands and other matters of importance in the assembly. Abdullah urged the MLAs to accord priority to the concerns of the people and highlight the issues and demands of their respective constituencies.
