J&K Assembly passes statehood resolution amid BJP protests, walkout

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly on Monday passed a resolution seeking urgent restoration of full statehood with a reference to autonomy amid agressive protest and walkout by the opposition BJP members.

The resolution was moved by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday last week and was passed on Monday after several legislators including from the ruling National Conference who spoke about the resolution and had brought amendments to include direct mention of Article 370, 35 (A), state flag, pre-1953 position and special status of J&K.

However after the discussion the resolution was passed as the members didn't press their ammendments. Abdullah termed moving ammendments as a "trap and BJP's scheme" to oppose the resolution.


The BJP legislators said raising Article 370 and pre-1953 autonomy issue was a "sabotage" to derail the process of restoration of statehood. The BJP protested against the resolution on Friday as well as on Monday, with party members jumping into the well of the House.
