Hemant Soren was chosen as the Chief Minister by the coalition government. However, it was not smooth sailing for the JMM supremo. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on January 31, 2024 in an alleged money laundering case related to a land scam, forcing him to resign from his position.
Champai Soren took over as the Chief Minister of the state on February 2. Hemant was granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court after nearly five months on June 28. A single bench of justice Rongon Mukhopadhyay granted the bail on furnishing bond of Rs 50,000 with two sureties of the like amount each.
Hemant returned as the Chief Minister after Champai resigned on July 3 and has remained the leader since then. The resignation came following an INDIA bloc meeting.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, JMM and Congress won five seats - all ST-reserved constituencies. It was a clear indication that after Soren's arrest, Jharkhand's prominent tribal leader, tribal voters consolidated in favour of the INDIA bloc. BJP won the remaining nine seats.
Jharkhand has 26. 3% tribal voters and 12.08% SC voters.
