JD(U) calls IPL obscene demonstration of money-power
JD (U) has described the IPL auction as a gross violation of human dignity and a shameless, obscene demonstration of money-power.
Cricket has become an ugly instrument of market forces. What we witnessed yesterday was a vulgar display of wealth, with even a Padma Vibhushan winner being put up for auction, JD (U) president Sharad Yadav told newspersons on Thursday.
He was especially critical of the manner in which the BCCI was functioning, and demanded its take-over by the government. It has been converted into a money-spinning organisation, which has become a den of conspiracies and intrigues. The government should take over this body and regulate the game for its genuine promotion, the JD (U) argued. The auction of cricket players, according to him, was yet another manifestation of lop-sided emphasis of our sports administration. While other sports and games continue to languish, cricket gets all the attention. The sports policy needs to be reviewed urgently, Mr Yadav demanded.
Were the second most populous country in the world, but figure at the bottom in the medals tally in all world events, including the Olympic Games. In spite of devoting our resources on the development of other games, our government ends up spending a lot on cricket. Now the market forces have hijacked the game completely, the JD (U) leader alleged.
While condemning the exercise, he demanded the withdrawal of all medals, honours, citations and freebies awarded to all those cricketers who had put themselves in the market for auction.
