JDU's national executive and national council on Sunday passed a resolution authorising Bihar CM Nitish Kumar to take the initiative to work towards unity among opposition parties ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

However, the party's national president Rajiv Ranjan alias Lallan Singh made it clear that CM Kumar is not a candidate for the PM's post. "Our priority is to unite the opposition parties," Singh told party leaders at Sunday's meeting at JDU's office in Patna. The party's three-day national executive, state executive and national council meetings ended on Sunday.

"The country is looking for an alternative to BJP. All opposition parties should get united for it. They must get over petty issues and come onto one platform. Opposition unity is the need of the hour in the interest of the country. JDU supports opposition unity and authorises our leader Nitish Kumar to take forward and facilitate it," a resolution passed at the national executive and national council meeting stated.

JDU expressed concern over price rise, lack of fertilisers and seeds for farmers, problems the lower and middle classes of society were facing and the growing hatred in society. Intolerance and fanaticism have grown in society, the party felt. JDU also accused BJP of protecting the interests of capitalists.

Sources in JDU said Kumar is likely to visit Delhi on Monday. "He will meet the leaders of opposition parties, including top functionaries of Left parties. Apart from discussing the country's political situation, he would request them to ensure unity among the opposition parties," a source said.

According to him, Kumar's first target is regional parties. "He is one of the most experienced chief ministers in the country today. We hope he will be successful in his new mission," the source further added.
