Jayant no longer just a name of Maharashtra home minister

MUMBAI: It wasnt just pink, and the launch happened two days after Valentines Day, but Maharashtra home minister Jayant Patil is having more than a brief brush with undergarments, unlike Shri Ram Sene leader Muthalik.

In a first of sorts, the Maharashtra home minister has launched a brand of undergarments with his own name. Jayant will have Bollywoods macho star, John Abraham as its brand ambassador.

Mr Patil, apart from being a successful politician, is known for his multitude entrepreneurial interests. He runs a well-known sugar co-operative and owns a milk product brand apart from having a say in a district co-operative bank. This new business foray is however different and has, therefore, interesting.

The launch of the new business is probably a case of perfect timing. It was on February 16, Mr Patils birthday, when vests and briefs were available at Islampur, a small town in his constituency. Jayant Patils predecessor R R Patil, who had to face an unceremonious exit late last year, comes from the neighbouring village.

The launch generated high levels of excitement thanks to John Abraham being flown in for the auspicious occasion. At a well-attended gathering, Mr Abraham unveiled the new brand. In his address, the actor used the occasion to say a few nice words about Jayant vests. He termed Mr Patil as a true gentleman politician. The vests and shorts would be marketed under the brand name Joys with `Jayant being the umbrella brand.

Our products are basically for the domestic market but we have plans to take them global, a close aide of Mr Patil said. The textile park where Jayant products would be produced, is named after the home ministers late father Rajarambapu Patil, who was a name in the co-operative movement and politics in western Maharashtra.

The manufacturing facility includes, among others, a co-operative cotton mill, an open-end cotton mill, a knit processing unit, a yarn dying unit, a weaving unit and a garment unit. It will employ 1,500 workers which will have 400 women.
