CHENNAI: Security personnel kept a hawk-eye vigil as AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa today stepped out from her Poes Garden residence to undertake the seven km journey to Madras University Centenary Auditorium to take oath as chief minister.

Stengun-toting commandos were perched on either side of her silver coloured SUV as it moved at a moderate speed to enable onlookers to have a glimpse of their 'Amma' en route the auditorium where the swearing-in took place.

Acknowledging their cheers on the way, Jayalalithaa smiled and flashed the victory sign besides greeting them with folded hands.

Plainclothes security personnel in the convoy were seen getting on and off to control the surging crowds.

Jayalalithaa's journey from her residence commenced with a brief pooja conducted in front of her vehicle praying for her success.

Flower petals were frequently showered on her vehicle on the stretch and had to be frequently cleared by her security men to enable the driver to have a clear vision and Jayalalithaa's face to be visible for the public.

Jammers and other gadgets were put to optimal use as Jayalalithaa is covered under 'Z' plus security status.

The Beach road through which her cavalcade moved was spruced up for the occasion with festoons and party flags erected at vantage points on the roads.

Braving the searing heat, a posse of police personnel were seen quenching their thirst sipping from water bottles as they kept a vigil on the road.

Some drummers and dancers were seen performing some distance away from the venue with the crowd egging them on.

Songs of popular MGR films were also played at some points, adding to the carnival atmosphere.
