Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa was buried with full state honours next to her mentor MG Ramachandran's memorial in Chennai's Marina Beach on Tuesday.

There was confusion about the type of funeral the late chief minister will be given, but informed sources told TOI that the party high command settled on burial, seen as keeping in with the rationalist Dravidian movement tradition.

Tens of thousands of mourners swamped the road to Marina, paying homage to the flower-bedecked body of the former chief minister, who was draped in her favourite green saree.

She was buried in a sandalwood coffin next to her mentor. The pair had starred together in several blockbuster Tamil films before shifting to politics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lead the dignitaries who paid homage to the late chief minister. He was seen hugging the new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam as the latter wept inconsolably.

Modi was also seen patting Ms Jayalalithaa's long-time companion Sasikala Natarajan on the head. The Prime Minister landed in Chennai a little after noon and flew to the hall in a chopper.
