The Jayalalithaa death probe, set up in September 2017, has been extended twice in over a year.
The Justice A Arumughaswamy Commision of Inquiry has written to the Apollo Hospitals group seeking documents related to the treatment administered to former chief minister MG Ramachandran, who was also admitted into Apollo Hospital ahead of his transition to Brooklyn Hospital in the US for further treatment.

Apollo Hospitals' counsellor Maimoona Badsha has confirmed the receipt of the letter, adding that the hospital group is expected to respond to the Commission's letter seeking the details by October 23.

According to people aware of developments at the Commission set up to probe the circumstances of jayalalithaa's death, the letter seeking records of MGR's treatment could be related to the procedure of clearing his travel to the US for treatment. MGR was flown to the US after a Cabinet decision to seek further treatment abroad and receiving the consent of kin -- his wife Janaki Ramachandran,

The Jayalalithaa death probe had also touched upon the prospect of moving the former chief minister abroad for treatment. It came to light when former chief secretary Rama Mohana Rao had deposed before the Commission saying such an idea was debated internally- advanced frequently by Lok sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai - "but it never took shape."

Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam in a recent speech had said that during the period Jayalalithaa was hospitalised in late 2016, there was fear among the top brass in AIADMK of having to face incensed AIADMK cadre for not attempting to move Jayalalithaa abroad as done for MGR.

The Jayalalithaa death probe, set up in September 2017, has been extended twice in over a year. It is expected to file a report to the government clarifying on whether or not there was any foul play in the circumstances surrounding the death of J Jayalalithaa.
