Jat-Jatav politics hots up in UP
With the Samajwadi Party, the BJP and the Congress extending their full backing to ‘Kisan Mahapanchayat’ held on Tuesday at Sisauli, Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Mahendra Singh Tikait’s native village in Muzaffarnagar district.
The mahapanchayat, held exactly six days after Mr Tikait surrendered before a Bijnore court after being charged with using a casteist remark against chief minister Mayawati, was organised to chart out the BKUs future strategy.
The BKU leader who was immediately granted bail by the court has emerged as the rallying-point for all anti-BSP forces in the state. All the three major political players ranged against the Uttar Pradesh chief minister had come out in support of the Jat leader with the aim of capitalising on the BKU-administration standoff, and its likely fallout on the Jat sentiment.
Political in the western districts of Uttar Pradesh has revolved principally around the Jat-Jatav caste dynamics. The intensification of the schism between the two social groups is certain to cast a shadow on politics in the region.
With all anti-Mayawati forces rallying behind the BKU leader, the BSP supremo is likely to find the going tough in the coming days. With her popularity-ratings taking a dip in the state, she is being seen as getting increasingly desperate in her reflexes.
In that respect, results the by-elections to the two Lok Sabha seats (Khalilabad and Azamgarh) and as many assembly constituencies (Bilgram and Colonelganj) in the state, scheduled to be held on April 12, will go a long way in shaping the strategies likely to be adopted by the main political players in the run-up to the next years general election.
