NEW DELHI: Underscoring the importance of India-Japan partnership, PMdesignate Narendra Modi has accepted Japanese Prime Minister Shinjo Abe’s invite to visit Tokyo during their telephonic conversation.

It isn’t usual to accept invitations for bilateral trips over phone, and Modi, who shares close ties with Japan, accepted Abe’s invite to visit Tokyo for the annual summit later this year.

ET had reported last week that Japan could be the destination of Modi’s maiden standalone bilateral trip abroad. Extending the invitation to visit Tokyo, Abe told Modi: “I would like to work closely with you towards further development of the Japan-India Strategic and Global Partnership. I would like to invite you to Japan to continue the annual summit meetings between the Prime Ministers of Japan and India.”
