Janardhan Reddy passes away
Senior Congress legislator in Andhra Pradesh P Janardhan Reddy died of a massive heart attack here on Friday.
He was first elected to the state assembly in 1978 and subsequently in 1985, 1989, 1994 and 2004. He was the labour minister in the earlier Congress government in 1989-94. Reddy was the Congress legislature party leader from 1994 to 1999. In 1999, he was defeated by former CBI director and Telugu Desam leader K Vijayarama Rao. Reddy headed workers’ unions in several Public sector units in the city.
Reddy was a staunch supporter of Telangana statehood cause.
, differed with the Y S Rajasekhara Reddy government on several issues pertaining to the region and was branded as a dissident leader.
He was critical of the government on the controversial Pothireddypadu head regulator issue involving increase in the capacity of the head regulator located in the Rayalaseema region to which the chief minister belongs.
Reddy, affectionately called ‘anna’ (brother) by his supporters, fought for several issues concerning Hyderabad, including bringing Krishna river water to the city.
Hundreds of his supporters, including women, gathered at the KIMS wept inconsolably, beating their chests and chanting slogans like ‘PJR amar hai’.
Political leaders, including the chief minister, several state ministers, Rajya Sabha MP V Hanumantha Rao and TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao paid their last respects to the departed soul.
Congress workers and his supporters gathered at various places in the city, particularly in his Khairatabad constituency, to pay homage to the leader. Reddy’s body was later taken to his residence in Domalguda.
