Jana Sena rejects 2024 seat-sharing formula for Andhra civic polls

Jana Sena, the NDA ally in Andhra Pradesh, has rejected any move to replicate the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly seat-sharing formula for the upcoming local body elections, arguing that seat allocation should reflect its expanded organisational strength.

The party, which won all two Lok Sabha and 21 Assembly seats it contested in 2024, says it deliberately conceded seats then to preserve NDA unity but expects a larger share in the October civic polls.

It has urged the alliance partners to identify their respective strongholds and distribute seats accordingly while reiterating its commitment to the NDA under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.


The demand comes amid speculation within sections of the TDP that the previous seat-sharing formula could be retained for the local body elections. Jana Sena leaders dismissed the idea, saying the political context has changed after the party's efforts to strengthen its grassroots organisation following the Assembly polls.

State minister and Jana Sena Political Affairs Committee (PAC) chairman Nadendla Manohar told ET that the party would seek a "reasonable number of seats" commensurate with its organisational strength rather than rely on the 2024 formula.

Local body elections in Andhra Pradesh are expected in October after the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Polling will begin with urban local bodies, followed by Zila Panchayats and rural local bodies.
