India Inc unconditionally supports the fight against corruption and is critical of the government’s handling of Anna Hazare’s agitation against a weak Lokpal bill. But there are voices of caution too, warning that the supremacy of Parliament should not be compromised at any cost

It’s a given that we want the Lokpal bill... Now the question is whether the bill should be as per the government’s version or the one drafted by the civil society, which wants it to have a wider ambit. But the debate and discussion should take place in peaceful conditions and, ultimately, it is the parliamentarians, our elected representatives, who will pass the bill. I do not like certain tax laws—so do I go on a strike? Things are going out of hand

The government’s misreading of the pulse of the nation has brought it to its knees. Anna Hazare is standing for a very important cause, and the government has totally mishandled the agitation. They should have responded more maturely. The Lokpal bill should have been drafted in an inclusive manner... I also believe that postions such as the Prime Minister should be brought under the purview of the bill

Anna Hazare has found a rallying point in fighting corruption. The public, including the youth, are supporting the movement because it is against corruption—not for Anna Hazare per se. It is only good that there is so much support for such a movement, but to tackle corruption the government will have to go beyond just Lokpal

Corruption is a very serious issue in India today and has the potential to derail our growth momentum if not tackled with a firm hand. It is good to see that people are waking up to this problem. I think the government could have dealt with the Anna Hazare issue in a better way and avoided the logjam. However, I am hopeful that it will engage in meaningful discussions with Team Anna and other organizations working to eradicate corruption
