Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Friday announced that there would be elections held in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since the abrogation of Section 370.

He said that the Union Territory witnessed a historic voter turnout of 51.06 per cent in the Lok Sabha elections. He said that Kashmir voted for ballot over bullet. The CEC added that the valley witnessed 30 point jump in voters from 2019 elections.



Jammu and Kashmir has 87.09 lakh voters, including 42.6 lakh women, across 90 constituencies.
Kumar added that the region is rural dominated and has 11838 polling stations with average of 735 voters per station.


The Election Commission said that they wanted to hold an election in Jammu and Kashmir as soon as possible. Kumar said that "we want layers of democracy strengthened in J&K", expecting more voters and

Kumar said that the election should be fearless and must be like a festive season. He added that the commission was ready to build on the foundation of the Lok Sabha election.
