MAHARASHTRA : After his tumultuous stint in Goa, SC Jamir will be sworn in as Maharashtra governor on Saturday. Mr Jamir currently holds the additional charge of the state along with Goa. Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Justice Swatanter Kumar will administer the oath of office to Mr Jamir at the Raj Bhavans durbar hall.

He was appointed the state governor on July 8. Mr Jamir was the Goa governor for four years. His stay in the popular tourist state, however, was marred by various controversies including his frequent trips to Nagaland. In one such visit, he was attacked by insurgents.

He was often criticised for not being in Goa. So much so that the BJP sought financial compensation from him for using Goas resources for his trips. Some of his decisions about the government formation also attracted wide ranging criticism.

Mr Jamir, regarded as one of the architects of modern Nagaland, is a law graduate from Allahabad University. In 1960, he was a member of the delegation that met Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for political talks that resulted in the creation of Nagaland.

In 1961, he became the first Lok Sabha member from Nagaland. He was an MP from 1961 to 1970 during which he also served as Union Deputy Minister for railways, labour and rehabilitation, community development and co-operation.
