Jallikattu fallout: Banned buffalo fight organised in Assam

Ahatguri is known to be a popular place where buffalo fights have been taking place in large tournaments since 1972.

However, it was neither sanctioned by the state government nor the organization, which used to organise the event.
GUWAHATI: In Assam’s Ahatguri, the traditional buffalo fight was organised on Friday. The organizers have clamoured for organizing the fight ever since Tamil Nadu government brought an ordinance to legalise Jallikattu which was banned by the Supreme Court in 2014.

Hundreds of people gathered in Ahatguri to attend the fight.

More than 15 pairs of buffaloes were made to fight at a large ground in Ahatguri.

The event was not held in Assam after the Supreme Court passed an order prohibiting all animal races and fights, thereby directing the Animal Welfare Board of India and the government to prevent infliction of unnecessary pain and suffering to animals.

Owners of the buffalo organised the fight. However, it was neither sanctioned by the state government nor the organization, which used to organise the event.

In Magh Bihu celebration (which is held in month of January) the bulbul/ buffalo fights are organised as a part of the age old tradition.
