To check the spread of the coronavirus in India, prisoners in jails are now manufacturing masks. In Uttar Pradesh, Mathura, the jail plans to distributing the manufactured masks among other prisoners across the state.

Manufacturing the masks on the weekend, the Director General of prisons Anand Kumar said that most of the jails in the state do have the facility to manufacture masks. In the ones that dont have the services, jailers have been asked to buy masks from outside to distribute among inmates.

Hand sanitiser dispensers and additional soaps have also been asked to be distributed and installed in jails as a precautionary measure. Last week, prisons in Barabanki, Ghaziabad, Firozabad, and Gautam Buddha Nagar also began manufacturing masks. Prisoners have also been asked to maintain a distance of at least one metre while interacting with each other.

Jails in Uttar Pradesh are overcrowded, and sanitisation drives have been told to be organised so as to spread awareness about the coronavirus. Daily updates are also being sent to headquarters. Although masks are not a foolproof way of checking the spread of virus, DG Kumar belives it is instrumental in maintaining hygiene.

In Kanpur jail, inmates are refusing to share their ward with new inmates, as they fear the newcomers may be bringing the new virus with them. Meanwhile, according to the superintendent, inmates have been told to wear a mask while roaming around and maintain cleanliness.
