KOLKATA: In a bizarre twist to the Jadavpur University controversy, the website of the varsity was "hacked", claimed its registrar Saturday, and the message posted on the vice chancellor's page saying he is "sorry" has been fabricated by outsiders.

"No, this message is not from our side. I have spoken to the vice chancellor. Somebody hacked it and posted it from outside. We have asked our technical team to look into it and if needed, we will also intimate police," Registrar PradipGhosh told IANS.

Students were allegedly beaten up by police Sep 17 as they were protesting outside vice chancellor AbhijitChakrabarty's office, seeking a fresh inquiry into the sexual harassment of a student in the campus last month.

The police crackdown has been widely condemned, with students and political parties demanding Chakrabarty's removal as the vice chancellor.
