IWF officials to present their case to Ministry
Top officials of the beleaguered IWF will meet Sports Ministry officials to present their case on the allegations of bribery and "manipulations" for Beijing Olympics.
IWF President Harbhajan Singh said IWF officials including its Secretary B R Gulati, who was being accused of taking Rs 5 lakh from Shailaja, would meet Sports Ministry officials on July 10.
The IWF's step came after the Sports Ministry decided to inquire into the alleged bribe scandal over the selection of lone women weightlifter to represent the country in the Beijing Olympics besides asking the Federation to select Monika and cancel the repeat selection trials on July 15.
Harbhajan said they would make the point that the Ministry should not infringe on the autonomy of the Federation.
"We have a meeting with the Sports Ministry on July 10. We will oppose any move which would infringe on the autonomy of the Federation," he said without divulging the details of what other matters would come up for discussion on that day.
Gulati was alleged to have taken the bribe to select Shailaja ahead of Monika, who won the lone Olympic berth for India in the Asian Championship in Japan in April-May.
Gulati, has, however, described the allegations as "rubbish and baseless" and said he has never done such a thing in his career as a sports administrator.
