It's time you acted: Chidambaram to Pakistan
'Stop asking questions and start prosecuting the 26/11 accused.'
Visibly irritated over Pakistans repeated claims that not enough evidence was provided to justify the arrest of Saeed, Mr Chidambaram told Islamabad to stop asking questions and start prosecuting the 26/11 accused.
They should stop asking questions and get on with the job. There is enough evidence provided in the dossier given to Pakistan, he told newspersons outside Parliament. It has been a little tiresome, he said in response to Islamabads dalliance over action against the 26/11 perpetrators citing lack of concrete evidence.
Only on Tuesday, Pakistani interior minister Rehman Malik had said that his government could not arrest the JuD chief merely on the basis of statements linking him to the Mumbai attacks and needed concrete proof before acting against him. We have demanded and we are demanding from India that if you have proof, give (it to) us, but do not spread propaganda...I assure (you) we will take action. But just on hearsay we cannot arrest our citizen, he told Geo TV in an interview.
If New Delhi wants some credible action, it needs to provide substantiated evidence, he added.
Mr Malik was backed by a top aide of president Asif Ali Zardari, attorney general Latif Khosa, who said: India wants us to prosecute him (Saeed) for his involvement in the Mumbai attacks but how can we do so without concrete evidence? Law demands evidence. Let it be very clear to everyone that we are not giving any latitude to Saeed or anyone else, he claimed.
