It's time for concrete opinion on UCC: BJP general secretary CT Ravi

"Now, it is the time for a concrete opinion on UCC. We haven't yet had a serious discussion on the implementation of UCC in our party. But the time has come to initiate a discussion," BJP general secretary CT Ravi said.

BJP general secretary CT Ravi said the Uniform Civil Code was never an issue in the current round of elections as it was raised briefly by Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. "The issue of UCC is not something new. Right from Ambedkar Ji in the Indian Constitution, UCC has been mentioned in the past too," Ravi told ET.

"Now, it is the time for a concrete opinion on UCC. We haven't yet had a serious discussion on the implementation of UCC in our party. But the time has come to initiate a discussion," he said.

During the Uttarakhand assembly elections, Dhami had said if BJP comes back to power in Uttarakhand, then the state government would form a committee to look into the implementation of UCC. Later UP CM Yogi Adityanath Nath had told ET the the decision of UCC implementation will be taken at the right time. UCC has been one of the rallying points for the BJP right from the Jan Sangh days.

Ravi also claimed that Hijab is not an issue at all. "Hijab is not an issue at all. It is the individual freedom for everyone to wear whatever they want. But an institution like school has a uniform with a rule that everyone should wear it," he said. "At the school level, if someone is trying to differentiate between people by wearing something else, then it is wrong."
