It's official! Say bye, bye to Xth board from '11
Class X CBSE students will not be evaluated through board examination.
CBSE will administer Class X board examinations for the last time in March 2010. From 2010-11, students who wish or need to appear for an external examination over and above the assessment by schools can do by availing of the 'examination on demand'.
In another measure to make education less stressful, CBSE-affiliated schools will introduce assessment system based on grades in lieu of marks from the March 2009 examination.
CBSE has proposed a system of absolute grading. Students will be evaluated on the basis of a nine-point scale, ranging from E2 (unsatisfactory) to A1 (exceptional). Alongside grades, students will be given the equivalent grade point, that is 10 for A1 (exceptional) and 4 for D (below average).
In response to a demand for a marks equivalent, CBSE will also provide a marks range. Therefore, an A1 will indicate marks in the range of 91 to 100, while an E2 will indicate marks in the range of 0 to 20. For the March 2010 examination, students will be graded.
With the system of Class X board examinations coming to an end, the schools will now have to migrate to a system of continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CEE). This school-based evaluation system will take into account all aspects of a student's development. The academic year will be divided into two terms April to September and October to March.
The CEE will be introduced at the class IX level from October 2009. Grading procedure, which was finalised by a high-level committee headed by CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi, will require students to secure more than 33% marks to get a certificate.
Continual assessment of students will mean assessing students at the beginning of the course (placement evaluation) and during the instructional process (formative evaluation). It will cover the co-curricular activities, besides the core areas of subjects being studied in the classes.
