The border Road Organisation road project in Afghanistan was the target of another terrorist attack in which one Indian was killed and four others injured.

NEW DELHI: The border Road Organisation road project in Afghanistan was the target of another terrorist attack in which one Indian was killed and four others injured.

ITBP constable Dev Kumar was killed on the spot while four other personnel Ramesh Kumar, Onkar Nath, Sandeep Nath and Pradeep Singh, were injured after a suicide bomber drove into a convoy of BRO personnel in the Nimroz province of southern Afghanistan. This is the third such attack in the last six months and is seen to be targeted at disrupting the project expected to bring large economic gains to Afghanistan.

The government expressed sympathies for the victims families and condemned the attack saying that terror tactics would not stop Indias reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan. ``We strongly condemn this latest act of terrorism on a project being executed for the development of Afghanistan. Such acts will not deter us from fulfiling our humanitarian commitments, said a MEA spokesperson in a statement.

The Taliban has continued to target the construction of the Zaranj-Delaram highway. The BRO project is one of the key infrastructure projects that the government has undertaken in Afghanistan and will provide a road link to the Iranian ports facilitating movement of goods in and out of Afghanistan.

On January 2 this year, a Taliban suicide bomber targeted a BRO convoy killing two ITBP personnel and injuring four others. The Taliban again targeted the project on April 12 killing two BRO engineers and injuring five others. There are around 400 personnel working on the construction of the 218-km highway.

There are around 4,000 Indians currently working in various reconstruction projects in Afghanistan where India has pledged $850 million in aid and assistance. Even though the government has said that it is putting in place security measures, concerns have been increasing about the safety of Indian nationals working on various projects in Afghanistan with a spate of incidents involving Indian nationals.
