Issue has never been a poll plank for us: Sena
The Shiv Sena on Friday downplayed the agitation resorted to by the Raj Thackeray-led MNS over the issue of Marathi signboards saying the implementation of provisions so far has been due to Sena’s efforts.
Addressing a press conference here, former Lok Sabha speaker and party spokesman Manohar Joshi said municipal commissioners are always appointed by the state government and have never implemented the rules regarding Marathi signboards under the Bombay Shops and Establishment Act seriously. It is only because of the efficient corporators and the present civic commissioner who has decided to implement the existing laws, that shop owners have fallen in line. If others want to contribute towards strict implementation of the laws, they are welcome, Mr Joshi said.
Mr Joshi said denied that his party was jittery because the MNS had hijacked its electoral plank. The issue of Marathi has never been an electoral plank for us. If others want to be a part of the Shiv Senas agitation for the cause of Marathi, they are welcome, he said.
The Sena leader charged that chief ministers belonging to the Congress before he assumed charge of the state have always helped in non-implementation of Marathi signboards being made compulsory. Only after I became chief minister, I rejected all op-position and vacated the stay given from time to time on making marathi signboards mandatory, he stated.
