ISRO Chairman suggests N-propulsion

Space agency chiefs from across the world today favoured lowering cost of space launches with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman G Madhavan Nair suggesting use of nuclear propulsion for the purpose.

HYDERABAD: Space agency chiefs from across the world today favoured lowering cost of space launches with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman G Madhavan Nair suggesting use of nuclear propulsion for the purpose.

Participating in a plenary at the 58th International Astronautical Congress here, Nair said there was need to further improve space launch systems and reduce the number of stages in launch vehicles.

"For future missions, nuclear propulsion may become important to lower cost," he told the plenary attended by space agency chiefs of the US, Russia, France, Canada, Japan, Europe and China.

India's Geo-Synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) use a three-stage propulsion system to transport satellites into orbit.

Nair said the ISRO was developing the GSLV Mark III which would enable the agency to put heavier satellites into the orbit.

General Anatoly Perminov, head of Russia's Federal Space Agency, said there was need to bring down the cost of space transportation.

"The process will take some time and the cost cannot be lowered using the existing space transportation system," he said.
