New Delhi: The government has appointed senior Income Tax officer of Indian Revenue Services, Sanjay Kumar Mishra, as the interim Director of Enforcement Directorate (ED) for three months after its present chief, Karnal Singh retires on Saturday.

Mishra will hold the permanent post of Principal Special Director and will hold additional charge of Director ED for three months or till a regular incumbent is found, whichever is earlier, as per an order issued by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet on Saturday.

Mishra was tipped to be appointed as the ED Director but has been only given interim charge of the post. This is amidst speculation that the government has not decided so far whether an IPS officer or an IRS officer should be appointed to the post.

ED's present chief, IPS officer Karnal Singh retires on Saturday and has not been given an extension. On Friday, ED filed charges against former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram in the Aircel-Maxis case.
