IPL and ICL have not hijacked T20 World Cup: ICC

The IPL and ICL will not emerge as alternatives to the Twenty20 world championship, which will continue to be the premier international event in the shortest format of the game, the International Cricket Council.

LONDON: The IPL and ICL will not emerge as alternatives to the Twenty20 world championship, which will continue to be the premier international event in the shortest format of the game, the International Cricket Council on Saturday said.

"There is no threat to the ICC World Cup Twenty20 and there is no risk of an alternative to it. The first edition in South Africa was a great success," President-elect of the world body, David Morgan said.

"The Indian Premier League and the Indian Cricket League have not hijacked anything," he claimed.

The cream of international cricket is presently representing various franchises in the IPL for considerable sums of money.

Morgan, however, said the ICC was considering an application for recognition put forth by the Essel Group-backed venture.

"We are in receipt of a communication from the ICL and the ICC is considering it."

The players turning out in the rebel league have till now been barred from figuring in the international cricket.

ICC CEO Malcolm Speed was asked to go on paid leave citing "fundamental breakdown" in his relationship with ICC President Ray Mali and Morgan said this had happened "some months back" without going into details.

He lauded Speed's role in the game's development in the last few years and said the Australian's tenure had seen a lot of success.
