Int'l cooperation will help bridge n-fuel supply gap: Kakodkar

Pitching for the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar on Friday said international cooperation could help bridge the fuel supply gap.

NEW DELHI: Pitching for the Indo-US civil nuclear deal, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar on Friday said international cooperation could help bridge the fuel supply gap earlier for the country's nuclear power plants which are running at half their capacity.

"I have always been saying that international cooperation is an additionality. Now, if you get that additionality you can bridge this gap (fuel supply) earlier," he told reporters on the sidelines of a function at the Shriram Institue for Industrial Research here.

Kakodkar said the Department of Atomic Energy was "taking action" to develop uranium production to meet the fuel mismatch for the domestic nuclear programme.

"We will enhance the output of uranium and meet that requirement for the domestic programme. The gaps will be bridged, no doubt about it," Kakodkar said.

Minister of State in the PMO Prithviraj Chavan had told the Rajya Sabha yesterday that the nuclear power plants were operating at around 50 per cent of their capacity.

He said efforts have been made by the government to augment fuel supply by opening new mines and augmenting processing capacity.

"The work on setting up a new ore-processing mill at Turamdih in Jharkhand has been completed and the production is expected to commence shortly," Chavan had said.

He said work has also started on a new uranium mine and mill at Tummalapalle in Andhra Pradesh.

"Work is in progress to establish more uranium mining and processing projects," Chavan said.
