New Delhi: The Congress made a brief and cautious comment on the US action in Venezuela, without specifically condemning the military aggression and capture of President Nicolas Maduro, limiting itself to expressing concern and stressing that principles of international law cannot be violated.

Party leader Shashi Tharoor went as far as saying that "might is right is new creed" but avoided directly mentioning the US or President Donald Trump.

"The INC expresses very grave concern on US actions relating to Venezuela in the past 24 hours. Settled principles of international law cannot be violated unilaterally," said Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh.

Neither Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge nor leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi made any comments till Sunday evening.

Congress Working Committee member Tharoor, who is also chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on external affairs, said in a post on X, "International law and the UN Charter have for some years now been honoured in the breach. The Law of the Jungle prevails today. "Might is Right" is the new creed."
