International Dalit meet to begin in New York tomorrow
An international meet aimed at discussing the plight of Dalits will begin tomorrow in New York
The three-day conference will highlight the problems faced by marginalised communities and seek practical solutions to them, Union Minister and Chairman of Dalit and Minority International Forum Ram Vilas Paswan told PTI here.
Paswan, who is heading a large delegation of leaders belonging to Scheduled Castes and minority communities, including some MPs from India, informed that the meet is being hosted by the American Federation of Muslims of Indian Origin.
The conference is likely to be attended by around 2,000 delegates from across the globe, including from countries like India, USA, UK, Sweden, Canada, Australia, Germany, Dubai, Phillippines, New Zealand, South Africa, Nepal, Malaysia, the Middle East, among others, the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) President said.
Besides, social activists, academics, community leaders, politicians and professionals would also present their views on the issue of social justice.
The conference would focus on Indian diaspora with special reference to discrimination on basis of caste, gender and religion, the prominent Dalit leader said.
The much-debated issues like the demand for affirmative action for backward sections to be extended to the private sector in India and reservation for women in the country's Parliament and state assemblies are also likely to figure at the conference.
Issues of quota for Dalit Christians and Muslims and reservations in higher judiciary for Dalits, OBCs and minorities may also come up.
