Interlinking of rivers: CM should seek support of parties, says CPI
ERODE(TN): CPI today welcomed the Tamil Nadu government's request seeking immediate commencement of work on interlinking of rivers and said the Chief Minister should seek support of other political parties as they would back it.

"CPI welcomes the request of the Tamil Nadu government for linking of peninsula rivers. The Chief Minister should try and get the support of other political parties for it as they would support linking of rivers," CPI national executive member D Pandiyan said.

He also urged the Tamil Nadu government not to support the land bill.

Welcoming the clean Ganga project, he demanded that the Centre clean all rivers in India which are polluted.

Pandiyan demanded that the state government desilt all tanks and ponds to replenish the groundwater level. This would also help cope up with decrease in seasonal rains.

The CPI leader alleged that in the name of protecting the wildlife, the forest department was evicting tribal people from forests and demanded that it be stopped.

Government should also ban sale of tribal lands to those in the plains so that the former may remain in the forests.

He said the national conference of All India Trade Union Congress would be held at Coimbatore from December 15 to 18, in which top Union leaders like leaders like Gurusarandas Gupta and Madhavan would take part.

Pandiyan later laid the foundation stone for construction of the party's District CPI office here.
