Inspired by Vietnam, govt plans to build ‘golden’ bridges here

The government is keen to build iconic bridges which can emerge as tourist attractions rather than being just utility structures. Sources said the recently opened Golden Bridge with support of two giant hands in central Vietnam is also being considered as a model for building modern design structures.

The 150-metre-long pedestrian bridge was opened in June in the Ba Na Hills resort, near Da Nang in Vietnam and it has been attracting tourists from across the world. The bridge’s hands are decorated with cracks and moss to make them look like old stone ruins.

Sources said the central government is looking at options where a similar iconic structure can be built to make it a global tourist attraction.


In recent years, there has been intense focus on building “beautiful bridges” with decorative lighting systems.

An NHAI official said there is a plan to build a 1.5 km long iconic bridge connecting Rameshwaram, which will have designs of temples. “There has been a huge change in approach while designing bridges and beautifying them. This will get more push in the future as the focus is to make them look beautiful, particularly at night,” said an official.
