Injured Indian student in Melbourne hospital 'out of danger'

MELBOURNE: A 25-year-old Indian student, who had slipped into coma after being stabbed by a group of teens here, is "out of danger" and has been taken off the life support system, according to a leading community member who visited the youth at the local hospital.

"He has come out of coma and moved his hands," said T J Rao while giving an update on the condition of Kumar, who was stabbed with a screwdriver on Sunday last in a brutal racial attack that had also left three of Indian friends injured.

"Kumar is out of life support, but doctors are still not very sure about his full recovery," Rao, also the former Consul General of India in Melbourne, said.

Rao, a leading community member, made these remarks after visiting the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he met Kumar. Doctors attending on Kumar briefed Rao about the condition of the student.

Indian High Commissioner Sujata Singh and Consul General in Melbourne Anita Nayar had also visited Kumar recently in the hospital.

Singh had then said that Kumar was being given the best of medical treatment.
