MUMBAI: The Centre has sanctioned 42 urban infrastructure renewal projects for five cities in Maharashtra, including Mumbai, entailing an investment of Rs 4,260 crore, state governor SM Krishna informed the state legislature on Wednesday in his address to a joint session of the Houses.
The Centre has disbursed the first installment of Rs 367 crore for these projects, to be executed in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik and Nanded. For Mumbai, the Centre has so far approved the Mumbai sewage disposal project and a part of the Mumbai Urban Infrastructure Project, the governor said.
The governor also took stock of the flood relief measures being implemented by the government, special relief measures for farm suicides and the power situation. Due to implementation of relief measures under the Prime Minister’s and the state government’s packages, farm suicides have come down significantly, he said.
The budget session had got off to a stormy start as a slogan-shouting opposition frequently disrupted the governor’s address. Earlier, the opposition, in particular Shiv Sena, created a ruckus over the governor giving his address in English. They wanted him to speak in Marathi, the state’s official language, when Mr Krishna started his speech in English.
Protesting opposition legislators flashed their headsets, saying they could not even hear the Marathi translation and one legislator even threw the headphones in the direction of the governor.
Interestingly, after the governor finished his speech and was walking out of the House, Shiv Sena member Dagdu Sakpal and a few other opposition legislators again shouted slogans, demanding the resolution of the border row with Karnataka, from which state Mr Krishna hail. Mr Krishna shook the Sena legislator’s hand and walked out of the House.
